Examination Syllabi

Ballet

Royal Academy of Dance

From five years old the Graded Syllabus is taught – Beginner Ballet/ Pre-Primary through to Grade Five. The RAD syllabus encourages self expression with a sense of performance and style, while building the foundations of strong classical ballet technique.

The Vocational Syllabus from Intermediate Foundation to Advanced Two requires a lot of time and commitment to reach the necessary standard – this work develops technique and artistry to the highest levels.

These exams are recognised worldwide, but it is not compulsory to take exams.

Tap

Theatrical Dance International

A fun style in which the dancer wears shoes fitted with heel and toe taps where rhythm and performance are paramount. This syllabus take beginners at age five right through to advanced levels.

The Theatrical Dance International syllabus now also offers new “Beat It” classes for older students as well as the traditional Tap syllabus.

Exams are available but not compulsory.

Jazz

American Jazz Dance Affiliation

From age five, this syllabus progresses to teach dancers a wide variety of jazz styles to popular music.

Based on a foundation of ballet technique and strong jazz dynamics, this syllabus develops strength, flexibility and great performance skills.

The work is up to-date, fun and exciting to learn. The syllabus is constantly upgraded which ensures a freshness and vitality for both students and teachers.

Exams are available but not compulsory.

Contemporary

American Jazz Dance Affiliation

Contemporary dance involves versatility and improvisation with a strong focus on floor-work and use of gravity.

It encourages dancers to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements to many different styles of music.

We are excited to introduce a brand new Contemporary Syllabus in 2024 – allowing our students 9+ to work towards examinations if they choose.

Recreational Classes

Funtime Fantasy

Tiny dancers aged 2 and 3 years old can twirl to their favourite tunes. We encourage parents/carers to join in the magical experience.

We help with their communication and social development by meeting each child’s emotional and physical needs.

This is a gentle introduction to song and dance using imagery and props, it is pleasure to see them master new moves.

Storybook Ballet

A fun experience where boys and girls aged 3 and 4 years can learn to dance in “storybook’ themed classes.

Designed with a musical mixture of movement and dance this class encourages teamwork, listening skills and use of imagination.

A benefit to all children, building confidence while dancing with new friends.

Musical Theatre

We offer these classes in Term 3 & 4 to work towards items for our end of year production.

These classes are designed to introduce students to the wonderful world of Musicals.

The classes involve singing, dancing and acting – popular songs and scenes from stage shows.

A fun class for all!

Silver Swans

Silver Swans® classes have been specifically designed for the over-55s, but whatever your age, this class provides wonderful benefits with elegant exercise to beautiful music, developing good posture, self-esteem and the chance to make new friends.

Whether you’ve never danced before or want to get back into the swing of it, this class has something for everyone.

Adult Classes

We offer both adult ballet and tap classes, giving you the opportunity to exercise both the body and mind, while getting to dance to beautiful music.

Dance is for everyone no matter your age or ability, it is never too late to start!

Stretch & Strengthen

An open jazz technique class, using dance specific conditioning exercises with a focus on battements, turns and leaps.

This class is designed to help improve the strength and flexibility of the intermediate to advanced level dancer.

Repertoire Class

An open classical ballet class for Intermediate to Advanced Two Ballet students

Taught by our lovely Katie Hurst-Saxton, an ex principal dancer of the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Victorian State Ballet. Miss Katie shares her expertise on Repertoire from different ballets, including the story and history behind them.

This class will not only provide a window into the world of classical ballets it will also help with the artistry and nuances required to perform all classical variations and dances.

Progressing Ballet Technique

Progressing Ballet Technique is an innovative body-conditioning and strengthening programme developed to help students understand the importance of training correct muscle memory.

With a strong focus on core stability, weight placement and alignment, the programme uses fit balls and TheraBands to aid in training ballet technique and strong muscle memory.

Competition Work & Private Lessons

Private lessons are available to help students prepare for exams, and also for competition work.

Competition students must attain a high standard in all aspects of their work to be considered.

Competition dancers can only perform a dance with the permission of their teacher.
